RUR Report 11

It seems I am appallingly late with is update, and it is not from want of material. Everyday more robot type news makes it my way. So it isn't the Jetson's yet but everyday more robots are making their way into our lives (everything is better in Polish plus now I can included this link which is totally unrobot related). When men in science labs started thinking about how robots were going to transform the world it was all about helping out the little house wife. In the days when women were to stay at home and clean it seems that someone had the idea that robots would make not having a job even more enjoyable. I guess back in the days of disposable income it was cool to stay at home and wait for your robot to do the laundry and make dinner. All while you... Don't get me wrong, I would love a life of leisure. But when I lead the life of leisure (those few months between semesters or when I was a kid and didn't have a job) restlessness quickly set in. I guess I don't understand how the rich do it. Maybe I need some lessons.

Robots have come a long way since the days of RollOh and the idea of an obsessive toasters.

Robots are now in the operating room. What what's that you say? Yep, we still don't have a robot that can walk up and down stairs with 100 percent accuracy but we have robots performing surgery. And for the most part I guess the idea is that physicians have to learn to control these little guys. The robots aren't running amok or anything...yet. But if you notice the article suggests that robot surgery isn't all its cracked up to be. I guess the blame is really on the physicians that need more work in the simulator. Ahem, with the DS (PS Way to go Spain - it took me like 30 min to figure out how to remove that glass), Wii, XBox or PS3 (so sue me there aren't any games for the PS3 let alone games about surgery).

RUR Report 10

Report 10 you say. Emily, have you forgotten how to count? The answer is no. 10 = 2 in binary and robots like binary. I mean really like it.

In general I think robots, then computer programmers then math geeks like binary, in that order. In other news, references to binary pop up all over the place. Like the in movie/( graphic novel that I haven't read) Wanted that I wanted to see but then after I saw it was sad I wanted to see it. Even Ms. Marvel had the alter ego (ahem another alter ego), the I don't have an emotional connection to my past because Rogue took my superpowers and there is some cosmic energy coming my way, Binary.

(I was going to spend more time dissecting the fact that her name is Binary and she has no emotions just like a robot but more on robots and lack of emotion to come. Let's just save that for another day.)

But seeing as how mutants aren't robots, let's talk about Futurama. Bender Bending Rodríguez is by far one of my favorite robots of all time, along with this ass of a robot. Futurama's big cable comeback with the sliced and diced Bender's Big Score while not my most favorite thing included a great binary reference. The truth is, the show is full of binary references from dreams to tattoos that open portals. Also people really get into this stuff. Who sits around and adds binary. Not me. I just Google for the answer (oh sorry I use the Google search engine).

Binary Game

RUR Report 1

Reporting on robots, what was I thinking? Am I interested in robots? yes. Am I going to be able to find content for a weekly entry? maybe. Yet I can't help think that I would have been better off writing about my observations or something of the like, but then again I think that is what my other blog is for.

Time to get on with it. In case you were wondering about the title of my entry and all subsequent entries, the title was selected from the work of Karel Čapek the Czech author who introduced the world to the word "robot". While he denied that it was his doing and gave credit for the creation of the word to his brother, I know that all good men will refuse something at least twice before accepting praise or credit. Čapek's play R.U.R. Rossum's Universal Robots was written in 1920 and first premiered in 1921. At any rate the play has it all; love, violence, despair, love again and of course robots. The ingredients if you will of any good science fiction work.

In other technology related news, my iPhone is now old. I need a new iPhone, but by the time that I get one then the new one will be out. Where does the cycle end? Applying Moore's Law very very broadly seems to be the trend at Apple. Oh, that and making a buck. iPhone 1.0 for sale.
